A run cycle animation of a Goblin

Goblin Run Cycle

I animated this run cycle animation as proof of concept. The very talented art team at Psygnosis San Francisco designed these little guys. Because they are meant to constantly run in hoards and destroy everything in their path, they were a very complicated to animate. I was the lead animator on the team, and I animated many different cycles to give these creatures all of their Goblin-like behavior. To create these animations, I used the venerable Lightwave 3D modeler, and SoftImage (pronounced soft-imahj – it’s French) for animating. For 3D animation, SoftImage blew the doors off of 3D Studio Max, and even Maya, so it’s kind a of sad to see how Autodesk consumed a superior competitor and killed it.

This is a run cycle of just one of them. I really enjoyed the process of 3d animation, it had an almost musical rhythm to it. I often consider making it a part of design work I am currently doing.
